The Cortez Family Farm, situated in the fields outside Santa Maria, embodies three generations of farming tradition in the Central California region. Led by Mayra and José Reyes, the farm cultivates a diverse range of vegetables including celery, broccoli, Brussel sprouts, spinach, beets, and onions, along with an assortment of berries, notably strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, and blueberries. Established in 1990 by Mayra's father, the farm was passed down to Mayra when he retired in 2017. Choosing to honor her family's legacy, Mayra continues to steward the land under the Cortez name, preserving the heritage of agricultural excellence for future generations.
We are a small-scale farm that takes pride in our commitment to sustainable practices. Through our rotational farming techniques, we effectively manage pest infestations without relying on pesticides. Although we are not a certified organic farm—primarily due to the challenges of leasing rather than owning our land and the associated costs—our dedication to the environment remains strong. For over 18 years, we have farmed the same soil without using harmful pesticides. Instead, we focus on pesticide-free farming and use only organic fertilizers to nourish both our soil and produce.
